Robert Lewis Taylor papers, 1954-1978.

Materials relating to two of Taylor's historical novels, The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters, set in the California gold rush of 1849, published in 1958 by Doubleday, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1959; and A Roaring in the Wind: Being a History of Alder Gulch, Montana, in its Great and its Shameful Days, published by G. P. Putnam in 1978. The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters material includes three pocket spiral notebooks of holograph notes taken by Taylor while studying the diaries of Joseph Middleton; three letters dated 1954, written to Taylor in response to his requests for information relating to his research; holograph and typed drafts; a trial print of the dust jacket; and a mimeograph typescript in three volumes of the novel. A Roaring in the Wind is represented by an unannotated typescript photocopy of the work which Taylor submitted to G. P. Putnam.
